Welcome to Acorn Class!

In Acorn class, we have 18 reception children and 11 preschool children; our class teachers are called Mrs Bates and Miss McConkey and our teaching assistant is Mrs Byrne. We are very excited that your child is here with us at Coupe Green and starting their primary school journey with us.

The Early Years curriculum is based on inspiring young minds through vibrant, fun filled topics that stimulate the imagination and the curiosity of our youngest learners. Topics are real life and learning is often driven by the children’s interests and learning needs. This often promotes many interesting questions about the evolving world around us that suddenly becomes a reality! Every child is Unique and we carefully track the children to ensure the firm foundations are embedded and that each child leaves the Early Years as a confident and independent learner.

Our classroom is colourful, stimulating, lively and well -resourced and learning is lead through carefully crafted and specific play skills. We are very lucky to have such a fantastic outdoor space which the children can access during continuous provision.

Homework

In Acorn Class, the children will get homework every Friday, to be completed and returned to school by the following Wednesday. For Autumn Term, the reception children will receive a new set of phonic sounds each week to consolidate their learning and support their cursive formation. A Pick and Mix homework will start in the Spring Term.

What have we been up to?

We are coming to the end of our ‘Me, Myself and Real Life Superheroes’ Theme. The children in Acorn class are thoroughly enjoyed getting to know their new peers, exploring superheroes and their special powers, thinking of our own special talents and why we are unique and learning about real life superheroes in our community such as police officers and doctors! We have been focusing on the books 'Colour Monster', ‘Superworm’ and ‘Supertato’ using our super listening skills and talking confidently about the key characters. For our next theme, in Autumn 2, the children will be exploring different celebrations and special occasions such as Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day and Christmas! We will be enjoying the story ‘Stickman’ and learning all about penguins and where they come from.

Literacy – In Literacy, we have been focusing on the story ‘Superworm’ and ‘Supertato’. We have been using the characters from the books and making our own endings up for the stories. We have been looking at how to handle a book with care and focusing on which way English is read. The children have then been writing and mark making relating to different aspects of the story and trying to add initial sounds and CVC words to label their drawings. The children in reception are currently learning phase 2 letters and sounds with Bumble Bear! We will be helping Bumble to blend the sounds to read and segment the sounds in words to write. We have been working very hard to develop our cursive formation of the sounds taught so far. The nursery children are currently working through phase 1 phonics, exploring different sounds in our environment and beginning to investigate rhyme.

Mathematics – In Mathematics, we have been looking at recognising numbers to 10. We have been using the language of ‘fewer’ and ‘more’ when comparing quantities and thinking about ways to check. We have been matching the superhero jewels to Superheroes numbers to match quantity and numeral. We have also been looking at measure in relation to capacity, making our own superhero powers potions!
