Pupils’ behaviour is good. Pupils describe it variously as ‘great’, ‘exceptional’ and ‘respectful’. They feel safe, get on well together and are very mindful about using their manners. Ofsted 2014
As a caring community we aim to create an environment which encourages and reinforces good behaviour and the fostering of positive attitudes. We have high expectations for outstanding behaviour at all times. Our mission statement, school aims, PHSE curriculum, school assemblies, teaching about the British Values and anti-bullying work help to teach the children the correct ways to behaviour in a number of situations.
Our behaviour management plan has three key aspects: rules, recognition and consequences.

Therefore everyone is expected to follow these whole school rules:
- We will always make good choices, be courteous and considerate.
- We will always try our best and allow others to do the same.
- We will show respect by looking after ourselves, others and school property.
- We will listen and follow adult instructions.
Each class will negotiate and agree a small number of additional rules to form Class Promises in order to promote a positive and safe learning environment.
We believe that children should be recognised and praised for good behaviour and The emphasis is on positive behaviour management through recognition and praise which will be given for work and behaviour.
Children can be rewarded in the following ways.
- Praise and positive individual or group recognition
- Stickers – either worn by child, or collected on a chart or card
- Positive recognition to parents at the end of the session/day
- Showing work to another adult/class/Headteacher
- Good work notes recorded in planners/books
- Certificates (presented in assembly)
- Stickers and rewards from the Headteacher – choose from the Prize Box.Each week we have an achievement assembly where children are awarded for the work they have done that week. Each teacher chooses two children from their class for a special certificate. We celebrate the children who have a birthday in that week as well. There is a cup presented for ‘Tidy Classroom.’ Children who have an achievement from outside of school also bring this to the assembly to celebrate their success.
At the end of the half term, each teacher chooses children from their class who they feel deserve an award for the whole half term. A letter is sent home a week before the assembly to invite parents to attend. It is a wonderful celebration and great to see proud children, parents and grandparents.
Dealing with unacceptable behaviour
Despite positive responses as a means of encouraging good behaviour, it may be necessary to employ a number of consequences if unacceptable behaviour escalates to enforce the school rules and to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
We have a hierarchy of corrective interventions and consequences. Within the classroom, the following consequences will be used for increasingly inappropriate or continued distruptive behaviour. However, extreme behaviour such as physical aggression towards others, will result in the immediate removal from the classroom and/or being send to the Headteacher. The emphasis at any stage is on the child being reengaged into the lesson and their learning as soon as appropriate.
Stage 1: Verbal reminder of the expected behaviour/ school rule/class promise
Stage 2: Time out within classroom. (1-3 minutes for KS1), 3-5 minutes for KS2)
Stage 3: Time taking off playtime or lunchtime to make up for learning time missed. (3-5 minutes for KS1, 5-10 minutes for KS2)
At this point their behaviour is recorded in our behaviour log. If a child repeatedly reaches Stage 3 or above this will be reported to parents. A child will have a period of reflection which will involve a discussion with an adult to prevent the incident from happening again.
Stage 4: If unacceptable/ disruptive behaviour continues, the child will spend time with a member of the Senior Leadership Team or the Headteacher.
It is most likely that the child will spend a period of time working away from the class. A meeting with parents will be arranged and recorded. There may be a possible use of timetable to monitor the child’s behaviour. Collectively there will be targets set to improve the behaviour.
For continual unacceptable behaviour or in case of serious verbal or physical aggression the child may be excluded internally from their class. This may also lead to a fixed-term exclusion, or on rare occasions, may take the form of a permanent exclusion.
Time is always taken to understand the behaviour and the child. Often there is an underlying reasons for certain behaviours and it may need a child needs extra support for a period of time in their life. We work with the child and parents to adapt our curriculum to cater for the needs of the child. Where a child needs specialist support we will work with outside agencies.
At Coupe Green Primary School we are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our pupils so they can learn in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our school. If bullying does occur, all pupils should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. We are a TELLING school. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell the staff.
We believe that there are two components to effective anti-bullying practice: Preventing bullying incidents and then responding to them. We have made a commitment to the Lancashire Anti-Bullying Charter.
We positively encourage all pupils to take responsibility for their behaviour and its consequences and to make a commitment to take action to end the bullying and provide support for the bullied pupil.
We have a ‘legal duty of care towards pupils’ and will endeavour to take reasonable steps to protect the welfare, health and safety of pupils. All staff in our school take all forms of bullying seriously, and seek to prevent it from taking place. We have a zero tolerance policy for Bullying at Coupe Green.
