Intent

Coupe Green Primary School recognises the vital contribution of physical education (PE) to a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development, as well as the role it can play in relation to a child’s spiritual, moral and cultural development. PE is an integral part of the curriculum to be enjoyed by all children. Physical education and sport are important in giving children the knowledge, understanding and the tools to make informed choices about healthy living and have a positive impact on their own health and well-being. PE is a real opportunity for both teachers and children to consolidate and work on the values that underpin every aspect of school life.

The teaching of P.E. at Coupe Green follows all the requirements set out in the National Curriculum for Physical Education; providing opportunities for all children to become physically confident and lead healthy, active lives. We also aim to provide all pupils with the opportunity to participate in competitive school sport both at intra-school level as well as against other schools locally.

Implementation

At Coupe Green we follow the Lancashire PE Scheme of Work and supplement this with outside specialists such as South Ribble Sports Partnership and the Premier League Primary Stars Programme. We place careful consideration when planning our curriculum to meet the needs of our children and ensure there is clear progression in skills as children move through the school. We also understand the need for regular repetition of skills to allow children to reinforce, develop and master these key skills.

In the Early Years and KS1, emphasis is placed on the fundamental movement skills required to become physically literate. Teachers provide lessons which allow children to develop these core basic skills and apply them creatively to fun games and activities.

From year 2 and across KS2 there is greater emphasis placed on developing sport specific skills as well as opportunities for reflecting upon and improving practice as well as evaluating the performance of each other. Children in KS2 also take part in swimming lessons at Bamber Bridge Leisure Centre. The Lancashire PE Scheme teaching units are progressive and allow children to build upon the skills they have learned previously.

Leading an active and healthy lifestyle also forms a key part of our teaching of Physical Education and is woven throughout our whole school curriculum. For example, through our Science curriculum as well as during food technology lessons within Design Technology. We also encourage all children to have at least 30 active minutes per day through brain breaks and outdoor learning as well as play and lunch times.

Extra-Curricular Activities

We understand and value the impact extra-curricular sporting opportunities can have on children and the importance of competitive school sport. We provide a broad range of extra-curricular sports clubs throughout the year and try to provide a mix of traditional sports such as football and netball as well as sports children may not have had the opportunity to try before such as fencing and curling.

Coupe Green is also part of the South Ribble School Games and Sports Development programme which provides us with access to expert coaches who come and support class teachers in the delivery of P.E. as well as provide regular inter-school competitions and whole school sporting events.

Through our broad extra-curricular offer, we place great emphasis on safe, active and fun cycling and scooting. Throughout their time at Coupe Green, all children get the opportunity to learn to ride and fix their own bikes or scooters as well as take part in Bikeability Road Safety training.
