Welcome to Oak Class

In Oak Class, we have 19 enthusiastic Year 1 children. Our class teacher is called Miss Brooks and she provides us with lots of new and exciting opportunities in which we learn. Miss Lambert and Mrs Southworth are our lovely Teaching Assistants. We love to learn and we always have lots of fun in lessons. We are very lucky to have a theme filled classroom and access to a small outside area too.  In Oak Class, we believe that every child is unique and we carefully track the children to ensure the firm foundations are embedded, enabling them to succeed.

In Oak Class, we follow the National Curriculum for Year 1. Our planning aims to inspire young minds through vibrant fun filled topics that stimulate the imagination and the curiosity of our youngest learners.

Homework

Homework is set using our ‘Pick and Mix’ system. At the beginning of each half term children will receive a home grid which contain a range of maths and theme challenges. Children can then pick which challenge to do each week. Homework is handed in on a Wednesday to ensure it is marked and ready for the following week. Children should also be reading either on bug club or a school book for at least 5 minutes every night.

Spelling homework follows a fortnightly system. On week one the children will be sent home with a spelling investigation task which will be based on the phonic sounds we have been learning that week. The following week the children will be sent home with a set of spelling words to practice. We will have a spelling test fortnightly on a Friday.

What have we been up to?

Our first theme of the year is ‘Amazing Autumn’. We have been very busy exploring all about this brilliant time of year and learning about how the world changes during this time. We have been exploring our own bodies and learning which sense is linked to each body part.

English / Literacy – We have been really enjoying the story ‘Tidy’. We have loved learning about the badger Pete who hates mess and we have been focusing on writing sentences using our capital letters and full stops. We have also been working super hard on our phonics and practising our segmenting and blending skills.

Maths – We have working very hard with our number and place value work over the last few weeks. We have been practising counting reliably and working hard on our number formation, we have been writing out numbers using chalk, paint and even sand. We have also been very busy exploring place value writing 2 digit numbers and we have been recognising how many tens and units different numbers have.
