Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Intent

At Coupe Green Primary School we want all our children to become confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians who possess the relevant skills and knowledge required to thrive in their future lives. We use the National Curriculum for Mathematics (2014) as the basis of our maths programme. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils master the key concepts of mathematics, appropriate for their age group, to ensure they make genuine progress and avoid gaps in their understanding which could become barriers to learning as they move through their education. Creative learning with an emphasis on investigation, cross curricular opportunities, reasoning, problem solving and the development of mathematical thinking are essential components of our approach to this subject.

Implementation

To help structure and plan our lessons as well as ensure there is clear progression in the teaching of mathematics across the school, we follow the White Rose Maths (WRM) scheme of learning. This scheme allows our teachers to plan and deliver high quality lessons which enable our pupils to become fluent, numerate, creative, inquisitive and resilient mathematicians. Teachers provide regular opportunities for children to develop both their mathematical fluency of the basic skills (such as written calculation methods and times table recall) as well as developing their reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

Alongside the WRM scheme, teachers also enhance lessons with a range of resources from websites such as NRICH, the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and Testbase. These resources not only help deepen children’s understanding but also provide excellent opportunities for collaborative working, mathematical discussion and provide teachers with valuable informal assessment opportunities.

At Coupe Green we place great emphasis on children’s fluency of the basic mathematical skills. This includes efficient recall of times tables. From Year 2 onwards, all children have access to the Times Table Rock Stars platform where challenges and competitions are set as part of children’s homework. Children can login using the username and password they have been given by clicking the image below.

Impact

Pupil Voice – Through discussion and feedback, children talk enthusiastically about their maths lessons and speak about how they enjoy maths. They can articulate the context in which maths is being taught and relate this to real life purposes. You can find a summary of our most recent Maths pupil voice below.

Evidence in Knowledge – Pupils know how and why maths is used in the outside world and in the workplace. They know about different ways that maths can be used to support their future potential.

Evidence in Skills – Pupils use acquired vocabulary in maths lessons. They have the skills to use methods independently and show resilience when tackling problems.

Breadth and Depth – Teachers plan a broad range of opportunities to use maths inside and outside school.
